Compact and versatile book holder,
Customer Video Review Length:: 3:11 Mins
Awesome book holder. Now I can hardly bear to read without it. Was surprised how small it is when it arrived, thought that it wouldn’t be very effective. Wrong.
It works great on all the books I’ve tried it on. Well, okay, I tried to demonstrate it for my friend with one of her law school text books, which is pretty huge, and it was overwhelmed. But on all the novels and paperbacks I’ve read it’s great. I like to read at lunch time and people are constantly stopping and doing double takes and asking about it. I should just get a bunch and sell them at lunch time.
The little ‘page slots’ are a really neat extra detail. You can put like 15 pages in the slots and it makes it super quick to turn pages without lifting the spring. Hard to describe, but trust me, it’s very cool and simple when you see it work.
My wife didn’t want to use it on some of her books because she thought it would be tough on the spine, bending it open too far. I guess if you have maybe a 50 year old paperback with a cracked spine thats falling apart, then, no, I wouldn’t use this or any other book holder for that matter. The book will be held wide open flat. (Well, that’s the whole point really!) When I’ve finished with a book, I put it back on the shelf and the spines all quickly return to normal and basically look un-read.
Another weird thing is how quickly I read books now. When the book is just sitting there open with no effort, it’s like you can’t take your eyes off it. Where was this thing when I was in college and had to read 50 pages a night for those Lit classes?
Also surprising is how stout this thing is. It’s like it was carved from a solid block of dense plastic. Really well made.
You will pry it from my cold dead hands.

|Meh.,
The Book Gem is a book holder. It is a clever design and is well constructed. I had high hopes for using it while reading in bed.
It works pretty well for some books, not at all well for others. It is hopeless for large hardbacks; it isn’t strong or large enough to hold them in place. For paperbacks, it works but is more hassle than it is worth. You need to be very careful when sliding the pages in and out of the holding slots or they’ll tear on the rubber grippers. Transferring groups of pages from the main clips to the holding slots and vice versa is an even greater hassle.
I find it quite useful for smaller crossword books where I need the stability but don’t turn the pages very often. For this one specific use, it is great; otherwise, meh.

|The Ultimate Hands Free Bookholder,
I hesitated at the price of this when I first bought one a few years ago, a new creation at the time. I actually bought several as I gave the extras as gifts. Now I need more, others have been noticing mine at work.
It more than paid for itself and will continue to do so, the quality is extraordinary. No detail of its design/use has been overlooked.
As it’s completely flat when folded, it is extremely portable with sharp edges to catch and crack or crush.
update 2011
I e-mailed to order more grips that had worn out and they sent new ones, in a #10 envelope, free. And will remain free for the life of the product.

|Fulcrum or Great Point? A Comparison,
 Â
 Â
 Â
The power in my house goes out on a regular basis, so I finally figured out that maybe getting a book light or two would be a worthwhile investment. After reading the reviews, I decided to get both a Great Point Light-Flex-Neck and a Multi Flex from Fulcrum. Each has its pluses and minuses and which one is better for you depends on what you want to use it for.
The Fulcrum light is brighter than the Great Point and covers a larger area. The switch is also much easier to use since it slides. On the Great Point, the top presses down and it’s hard to get it to stay on. Sometimes it switches off for no apparent reason. It’s either a poor design or I got a defective unit. The Fulcrum also takes 3 AAA batteries, which fit into the base, making it both heavier (about 2 1/2 ounces compared to about 1 1/2 ounces for the Great Point) and as a result making the clip a lot bulkier as well. The Great takes lithium batteries, much lighter, but also harder to find.
The Fulcrum is too heavy and too bulky to make it easy to attach to a paperback, and if you want to attach it to any book and hold the book up to read, it gets heavy very quickly. Its brighter light and greater weight and area make it a good choice for when you want to set a larger and heavier book on a table or for attaching to a very sturdy and prominent back rest, plus the easy availability of AAA batteries means you probably have a spare set around when the ones in the Fulcrum run out or at least you can grab replacements at the grocery store. The Great Point is better if you want to attach it to a book you are holding up to read, or to a paperback, or for when you want a little less light so as not to disturb a partner in bed. In any event, since they are both better than reading by candlelight both suit my needs, but one or the other is probably going to be better for most people depending on what you want. Or spring for both so you always have a spare. At this price, you could just about afford one for every room.

|my favorite book light.,
 Â
 Â
I have gone through about ten book lights, and I think I like this one the best. My previous one was the type that clipped to the spine of the book, which I was not crazy about, but it did shine a better white light on a larger portion of the page then all my previous lights. Then it disappeared one day. I am sure I will find it months from now in the bottom of one of the kids toy boxes.
So I needed a new light and looked to Amazon. I found this one that had some pretty decent reviews, so I bought it. I am glad I did. The lightweight body clips to the back cover of the book ( or to a bunch of pages on a soft cover book ) the flexible gooseneck is very thin, but holds its position well. The LEDs give off a bright, white light that easily covers both pages fully on even a large hardcover book. No more dark corners to contend with. The base is small ( holds three AAA batteries ) but large enough to sit flat on the base if I do not want to clip it to the book.
Overall its a good book light that I am happy with.
***update 2/14/2010*** This book light has functioned flawlessly for over 2 1/2 years of almost daily use. I just had my first problem with it. The light started flickering and I would have to tap the head (part with the light) to get it working again. It happened for three or four nights in a row. I was seriously upset because this is my favorite book light and I really did not want to have to replace it, and this thing has seen some serious book time.
Well I looked at the head and there is one small screw on it. So I laid it out flat on the table, removed the screw, then took the cover off. There is a small metal slide and I figured the bent piece was not making contact, so I bent it just slightly, and it works again. I did that 1 minute repair three weeks ago and everything is working great. I look forward to another 2 1/2 years of service on this great little book light.

|Best Yet,
 Â
I have a drawer full of book lights. This is by far the best. Long flexible neck that stays where you put it. Enough batteries to keep it going. Wide, evenly dispersed light with no hot spots. It will even light a book with large pages. This is it.

|She Undid Me as Well,
 Â
If someone would have told me six weeks ago that by now I would have read and been completely absorbed by the tale of a 257 pound girl named Delores I would have told them they were out of their mind. But strange things happen when I find myself without something to read. Invariably I turn to our home library to consider reading a book that my wife purchased, or perhaps re-reading one of my old favorites. This time “She’s Come Undone” caught my attention. “Mine is a story of craving; an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered,” said the back cover. “That’s an interesting hook,” I thought. “And the author is a man delivering a first person female narrative? Hmmmm… may have to give ole Wally a few pages of my interest.”
That was all Wally needed. Within just the first few pages describing Delores’ perfectly natural early childhood and allusions to her future woes I was engrossed.
This book is about the possibly healing affects we can have as friends and the potentially destructive power we have as family. It is about the undeniable value of positive self-image and the brutal consequences of inappropriate guilt. It is about divorce, it is about AIDS, it is about obesity, and it is about rape and abortion. It is about hope and love. It contains several hundred of the most physically painful pages that I have ever read, interrupted only intermittently with some dark joke made as Delores faces her struggles. In the space of 465 pages Wally brings to life not a classic heroine who defeats all of her foes, but a woman simply trying to survive. Even after a week I feel sympathy for this illusion created by Wally Lamb, and throughout the day I look for her. Sadly, I see her in many faces.
A highly, highly recommended read for anyone who feels they have the stomach for it. While many of the topics addressed should be discussed with teenagers, I would not recommend a young reader going this one alone. There are astonishingly important lessons here. Lessons for all of us.

|Great writing, captivating story….depressing.,
I picked up this book recently and once I started it I couldn’t put it down. This book is written exceptionally well, and the characters and story flow smoothly and realistically. I was stunned when I realized it was not an autobiography, and was written by a man! The first person voice of a female is quite convincing. I was more than impressed with the writing and the story. Any book that can evoke emotions like this does, is worth looking into.
That said, should you read this book? It depends. All of the highlights above are true, but, sadly the overall effect is depressing. I kept waiting for the situation to improve, for the story to pick up, for the victim mentality to end. It doesn’t.
I gave the book 3 stars, 5 for writing, and 1 for the investment of several hours into what proved to be a draining and disturbing look into the life of a troubled young woman. I liken the experience to waking up from a bad dream, and feeling the lingering effects into the day. Your call as to whether you wish to jump on board and go along for the ride.

|A sweeping novel with an unforgettable heroine…,
 Â
This book was terrific! She’s Come Undone is a powerful epic, an emotional journey in the life of Dolores Price. Wally Lamb’s Dolores is a perfectly flawed character and easy to get attached to. Brilliant writing, a fabulous point-of-view of a female told through the hand of a male. How did he do it with such spot-on honesty?
She’s Come Undone begins in the year 1956 when Dolores is 4 and her family gets a brand new television. Soon, this seemingly normal life begins to unravel, leaving Dolores the product of a marriage gone wrong. While reading this book, I feel this moment of her parents’ divorce became the crucial building block of Dolores’s downward spiral. And while I do not want to spoil the plot for you, I will say that Dolores lives through some of the most terrible events, and desperately struggles (though at times seems indifferent) to regain the normalcy she once had.
Vivid and emotional, this wild ride pulls your heartstrings and strikes your nerves, sometimes within the same sentence. Pages full of pain and sadness, but also sprinkled with a snappy attitude that had me laughing in my seat. I felt a certain kinship, an almost sisterly devotion toward Dolores, and I praise Wally Lamb for creating this wonderfully real and troubled character.
